The Travel Skin Ritual: How to Protect Your Skin from Flights, Sun & Salt

September 15, 20265 min read

Between long-haul flights, brilliant sun and warm salt water, skin quietly takes more of a beating on a Caribbean holiday than most people realise. Here is the complete ritual we recommend, before you leave, throughout your stay, and once you're home.

Prepare Your Skin Before Travelling

A gentle face and body exfoliation 24 to 48 hours before departure, followed by generous hydration, helps create smoother skin and a more even, longer-lasting glow. Avoid anything aggressive immediately before strong sun exposure, freshly exfoliated skin needs a day or two to settle before it meets the Caribbean sun.

Protect Your Skin During the Flight

The low humidity inside an aircraft can leave skin feeling dry and uncomfortable within a couple of hours. Carry a mineral-water facial mist, apply a light moisturiser before boarding and again mid-flight, and drink water regularly throughout the journey.

Rehydrate From the Moment You Arrive

Good hydration throughout your stay matters for your body, your skin and how you feel overall. Around two litres of water a day is a useful general guide, adjusted for the climate, your activity, and what feels right for you.

Holiday cocktails are, of course, part of the experience, but alcohol contributes to dehydration, so try alternating each cocktail or glass of wine with a glass of water.

Follow a Light Morning Beauty Ritual

Keep the morning routine simple and suited to the Caribbean climate:

  1. A gentle cleanser
  2. A hydrating serum
  3. A lightweight gel-cream that hydrates without a heavy or oily finish
  4. A broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, SPF 30 at minimum, SPF 50 preferred for intense Caribbean sun

Apply sunscreen to the face, neck, ears and every exposed area of the body. Reapply every two hours, and immediately after swimming or sweating, following the American Academy of Dermatology's recommendations.

Wearing sunscreen doesn't mean giving up beautiful, luminous holiday skin, it protects against sunburn, premature ageing and uneven pigmentation. The goal was never unprotected tanning. It's healthy, protected, beautifully cared-for skin.

Rinse Away Salt and Restore Comfort

After swimming in the sea, rinse your face and body with fresh water whenever you can, salt left to dry repeatedly on the skin adds to tightness and discomfort.

After showering, apply a hydrating body lotion or a soothing after-sun product. Daytime makeup can stay minimal, hydration, comfort and sun protection are the priority.

Make the Evening Ritual Essential

At night, skin needs a complete but gentle routine:

  1. Carefully remove makeup, sunscreen, salt and impurities
  2. Cleanse without stripping the skin
  3. Apply a hydrating, antioxidant or gentle anti-ageing serum
  4. Finish with a lightweight gel-cream or soothing moisturiser
  5. Apply a comforting after-sun body lotion

A hydrating overnight mask once a week is a welcome addition. You should wake up with skin that feels refreshed, comfortable and beautifully cared for.
